FRUSTRATED drivers and councillors have called for potholes on a busy Colchester road to be filled in after years of inaction.

Berechurch and Shrub End councillor Dave Harris has spent years trying to get the holes in Layer Road repaired.

He says promises they would be dealt with in March were not followed through with.

Mr Harris said: “These potholes have been there for a couple of years now.

“They were supposed to be done back in March 2024, but when it came to it the works were never done.

“The whole road needs to be resurfaced, as it is deteriorating each week that goes by and I’ve had a lot of residents complaining about the state of the road.

"I’m frustrated to see that nothing has been done about it.”

One resident, Melanie Capel, who lives in the Berechurch area said: “It needs to be fixed as it’s a very busy road.

“Now schools are back open, there will be more traffic on the road.”

Councillor for Shrub End ward, Claire Osborne, is a regular user of Layer Road.

She said: “I’m a frequent user of the road by both car and on the bus and I think it’s very important to get it sorted, being the road that leads into the heart of Shrub End.

“I have been repeatedly told because of budgeting that Essex County Council are having to pick and choose potholes to sort, and it doesn’t give me much hope that the works will be done.

“We’re forgetting about the minority - Shrub End has lots of people with access needs, and they are being forgotten about with an unnecessary hazard such as this.”

"Residents want easier access and better conditions."

A spokesman for Essex Highways said: “Layer Road in Colchester is currently scheduled for resurfacing works later this month.

"This is via our Members’ Highway Initiative which sees County Council Members prioritise the issues they want Essex Highways crews to repair.”
