A CARING man has paid tribute to his brother who died of cancer and helped raise thousands for a vital charity.

Ashley Barrow, of Colne Engaine, helped raise more than £8,000 for St Helena Hospice through a fundraising night last Saturday where he ended up shaving off his locks of hair.

It was a tribute to brother James, from Earls Colne, who lost his battle against stage four bowel cancer in June this year.

Prior to his death, James’ wife Nicky Barrow launched a fundraiser to help purchase a year’s supply of a private drug known as Bevacizumab or Avastin.

It was hoped that the drug would help improve James’ quality of life.

The event was held at the Drapers Pub, in Earls Colne, from 4pm to midnight and raised money for the hospice which helped care for James before he died.

There was an indie disco which played some of James’ favourite classic hits from bands such as The Killers, Blur, The Temper Trap, and other acts from the 2000s, and live music from The A.MS.

Ashley said: “It was an amazing night. There were lots of people, lots of smiles and some tears, but it was fantastic.

"We are thankful to The Drapers and the band was amazing.”

Ashley’s head shave took place on the night on what would have been James’ 41st birthday.

James' son Archie shaved his head as well in memory of his dad.

Ashley said:” It was emotional, being my brother’s birthday, but I was quite excited when I got it done.

“Everyone was cheering - I was over the moon with it.”

Just over £4,000 was raised on the night, and with the JustGiving page that was set up before the event, a total of £8,500 has been raised for St Helena Hospice.

Ashley said: “It is amazing. St Helena Hospice doesn’t get enough funding and relies on fundraising. To raise that much money has taken my breath away.

“We are so thankful for the kindness and generosity of Earls Colne and people elsewhere”
