A HISTORIC former military site which has stood empty for years in Colchester has been put up for sale.

The former Cavalry Barracks, in Butt Road, was part of the 2010 Quadriga estate development by housebuilder Vistry Group, which saw many homes built off Abbey Field.

But work on the former barracks has not started and the buildings have fallen into a derelict state over the years.

After a resident spotted new signage and fencing at the site, it was hoped that this could have been an indicator of works to begin.

Christ Church Ward councillors also expressed their thoughts on the site, with one saying how “disappointed” they were over the “little progress” to the site.

Now, the former barracks have been listed by estate agency business Savills for an undisclosed sum on Rightmove.

It is listed as freehold with vacant possession and has planning permission for 70 homes to be built on the site.

Savills has confirmed that all offers are invited to be made on an “unconditional basis” and preference will be given to “parties who can clearly demonstrate that they have undertaken a full analysis of the site”.

The Cavalry Barracks was the earliest permanent barracks of its kind at Colchester Garrison when it was built in 1862.

It was also used in the opening and closing credits of comedian Rowan Atkinson’s hit comedy series Blackadder Goes Forth.

Colchester MP and Christ Church Ward councillor Pam Cox has reacted to the site’s listing on Rightmove.

She said: “I’ve long said that if Vistry prefer not to fully develop the site then they should sell it.

“I understood they’re now considering that option and very much hope this will move things forward.”

Savills will be hosting a viewing of the former barracks to interested parties by booking reservation only this Thursday.

The deadline for all offers on the site must be submitted by September 27.
