WOULDN'T it be nice to leave a game without the main topic of conversation being about the officials?

The words of my friend and fellow Colchester United supporter Aaron Finch who summed up the feelings of the U’s faithful, as we were leaving the Bromley game.

This has sadly been true over the last few games, where nothing seems to have gone our way when it comes to those in charge of decision making.

Saturday was another example of inconsistency on what is constituted a foul, with two similar incidents resulting in two different decisional outcomes.

But we cannot and must not become a victim culture, where no matter what happens we blame the officials and do not take ownership of our own mistakes.

While I do believe that the PGMOL needs to sort out the issues from their end, there is no way we can sit and say this is the reason we have not been winning games.

Bromley was another example of us playing some nice football at times, having our spells on top, but ultimately not delivering.

When we go behind inside the first 30 minutes, we give ourselves a lot of work to do.

The away side will always sit in and look to frustrate us, while we then have to look to to not only unlock their defence but also ensure we do it in a way that does not leave us exposed on the counter.

The second half against Bromley was much better than the first.

Owura Edwards made an almost instant impact when he was brought on in the 54th minute, needing only six minutes to connect with a superb Jack Payne ball at the far post to level the score.

Once we did equalise, there was a change of pace and it felt like we could have gone on to win the game if things had been different from the man in the middle.

We had our chances and at times, were not clinical enough in the final third, something that is becoming a bit of a theme.

Credit to Danny and Nicky Cowley as since they have come in, these type of games have gone from one we would have lost to those that we are now drawing, similar to Accrington the week before.

Now the challenge is to go to the next level and get the win and to do this, we just need to tweak things a little and eradicate stupid errors.

Football is, of course, easy to play when watching and a much harder prospect when you are out there on the grass and we as fans understand that mistakes will happen.

But we need to iron out reoccurring ones and add more of an eye for goal into the mix.

Let's not forget our top scorer so far this season is Ben Goodliffe, a centre-back who has missed games through injury.

Lyle Taylor has looked sharp in the two games we have seen him and once he is up to speed, he will be a threat to the opposition defenders, so him combined with Payne, Bishop and the likes of Edwards should be producing goals once everything clicks.

While it is early days and people keep saying it is a new team etc, we must be careful not to fall back on this to much.

Soon it will be October and before you know it Christmas; the season will fly by and we cannot afford to be waiting much longer.

I have full faith in the Cowleys and the players they have to make it all work, so once it does we will be a force to be reckoned with.

To help kick it all into place, maybe starting Edwards on Saturday against Morecambe would not be a bad place to start.

On the subject of our trip to Morecambe, this game will be a test.

They are a side who have no points on the board and are even yet to score a goal this season.

We need to go up there and put in a strong performance and bring back three points.

Let’s all back the lads and keep up the noise.

It is finally fun being a Colchester fan again and let's hope there is plenty more to cheer about, over the coming months.

Up the U’s.
