OLYPMIC bronze medallist Lewis Richardson has opened a new road crossing in Colchester to boost children's safety.
The boxer and councillor Dave Harris did the honours at the toucan crossing on Berechurch Hall Road today.
The crossing will be used by children walking to St Michael’s School on Camulodunum Way, off Berechurch Hall Road.
Persimmon Homes Essex installed the cycle and pedestrian crossing close to their St Michael’s Place development.
Mr Harris and Lewis cut the ribbon with three students from St Michael’s School.
Lewis said: “It's vital in terms of child safety, especially so local to a school from the new site, so it's very important.
“It’s a pleasure to be involved in the opening and seeing some of the children today.
“And also being involved with Persimmon Homes who are an official sponsor of Team GB as well, so there's a good link with my journey.”
Shrub End and Berechurch councillor Mr Harris said: “It's essential that this was put in place.
"It’s made an immense difference to the whole community on the southern side of Berechurch Hall Road.”
“Without that crossing, they wouldn't safely be able to cross to the other side. Over the years this has been not needed, but now you've got buildings this side.
“I want to thank Persimmon Homes for doing such a good job of it and all the people that took part over the years.”
Persimmon Homes Essex boss Richard Hush said: “We are delighted to have been able to open the crossing to coincide with the start of the new school term.
“We have worked in partnership with Essex County Council and councillor Harris to ensure the children living at St Michael’s Place and neighbouring roads have a safe route to and from school.
"At Persimmon Homes we take great pride in building safe communities.”
St Michael’s Primary headteacher Gail Morgan said: “The school is happy and grateful that the children and families now have a safe place to cross Berechurch Hall Road, which is a particularly busy road near our school.
“Lots of our families live on the new Persimmon Homes development and this ensures their safety when making their journey to school each day.”
