A COLCHESTER landmark which is more than 140 years old has received a special visit from government officials and is offering residents another chance to visit its historic interiors.

Members of North Essex Heritage welcomed employees of the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG) for a tour of the Jumbo water tower, in Balkerne Gate.

The water tower is being leased by North Essex Heritage in an effort to produce a commercially viable facility which will pay for the building’s upkeep.

North Essex Heritage was previously given £250,000 development funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund to work on its plans to restore the building.

The government officials were hosted by Colchester Council for the visit.

North Essex Heritage chairman Simon Hall said: “It was great to be able to take representatives of MHCLG up Jumbo.

“The Government’s contribution has been critical to our ability to raise additional funds to support our efforts to deliver the Jumbo Project for the benefit of the people of Colchester.”

Colchester Council leader David King said: "This year sees regeneration gathering pace within our city centre, made possible by the help and support of many partners, including the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government.

"It was great to see them visiting to engage with our officers and gain insights into the exciting changes that lie ahead for Colchester."

In 2021, the building’s owner, Paul Flatman, agreed to lease the grade II listed water tower to North Essex Heritage for 150 years.

Recently, the charity was gifted a copy of the priced estimate to build Jumbo, with the original estimate being £7,699.

North Essex Heritage is now teaming up Colchester Art Centre director Dr Anthony Roberts, for a special event at this year’s Roman River Festival.

A special event will take place on September 29 from 10.45am to 2.30pm, when visitors to Jumbo will be able to take in the views of the city while enjoying performances of poetry and music.

Anthony will be sharing some of his best-received lockdown poems, and be joined by cellist and Wild Arts artistic director Orlando Jopling.
