COLCHESTER United take on a Morecambe side propping up the whole of the Football League, this weekend.

But U’s head coach Danny Cowley insists appearances can be very deceptive, when it comes to the Shrimps’ current lowly League Two position.

Morecambe have lost all five of their league matches so far this season, without scoring a goal.

But all of those defeats have been by a single goal and four of them have come against sides currently residing in the top eight.

Cowley said: “League Two is a brilliant league.

“It’s such a tough league and the difference between success and failure is so fine.

“I can give you a brilliant stat – Morecambe are bottom of League Two at the moment and have conceded five goals; Doncaster are top of League Two and they’ve conceded six goals.

“This just shows you the nature of the league and the fine margins.

“Morecambe have been very, very good in the games that we’ve watched.

“I would argue that they could have won at least three of their opening games but they haven’t and they’ve come up on the wrong side of it.

“They’ve played some of the best teams in the division in Doncaster and Gillingham and Walsall.

“Derek Adams is a really experienced manager and a manager who’s done well, in League Two on a consistent basis.

“You’ve only got to look at their squad of players to know that it’s going to be a really tough game.

“I think they’ve recruited well and Derek knows League Two inside out.

“He’s been very successful in this division previously and they look a good team.

“We know that it’s going to be a really tough challenge but this is every game in League Two.

“The league is just so competitive and I think this is why we love it and why the lower leagues are so brilliant.

“From game to game, you just don’t know which way the results are going to go.

“There are such fine lines between winning and losing and we have to keep working hard to make sure we get on the right side of them, because our lives are a lot better when we win."

Cowley has happy memories of Morecambe, where he registered his first victory as Colchester boss back in January.

Arthur Read’s excellent free-kick secured a 1-0 win for the U’s, in the opening weeks of Cowley’s reign at the JobServe Community Stadium.

Cowley added: “Arthur Read was practising free-kicks at the back end of training and it reminded me of the goal that he scored against Morecambe, nine months ago.

“It was a really hard-fought win and a really important one at the time.

“I just remember being so pleased for the supporters, because they’d travelled in numbers and I don’t think they’d seen too many wins on their travels, up to that point.

“It’s always my favourite type of win, when you win away from home and keep a clean sheet – these are always the best wins.

“For us, it’s a brilliant game because it’s our next one.

“We drew our last away game (at Accrington) and I think we took a lot of learning from that game.

“We’re excited to try to find a way of going to Morecambe and winning.”
