CAMPAIGNERS have vowed to fight a controversial bid to demolish and rebuild a historic bridge near Colchester.

More than 8,000 people have backed calls to have Boxted Bridge repaired instead of being demolished and rebuilt by Essex County Council.

But Essex Highways have now put in a application to press ahead with the plans.

The bridge, which was built in 1897, was earmarked for demolition six years ago, sparking anger among residents in the area.

An action group called Save Our Bridge was formed to fight the plans.

Campaigners want to save the bridge as a heritage asset and protect the Dedham Vale National Landscape.

In a statement, the group said: “The scheme to demolish and replace the bridge with a clumsy replica seems strangely wasteful, unwanted, unnecessary, unjustified and very doubtful value for money.

“In short, an extravagant contrivance to avoid long overdue maintenance and repairs - a recommended approach put off with monotonous regularity for 30 years.

“We intend to challenge this application, at all levels, and as strongly as its sponsors are trying to push it through.”

The group has gathered support from various sources, including parish councils, environmental groups and the River Stour Trust.

A spokesman for the River Stour Trust said: “Our concern is the navigation of the paddelists on the river.

“There has been a route put in place around the bridge, as it is deemed unsafe for the waterway.

“We want a solution. If it is possible to repair the bridge, this would be our preferred option.”

A spokesman for Essex Highways said: "The closure at Boxted Bridge was put in place following an inspection in June 2023.

“Following that, an immediate risk structure assessment and a structural review were undertaken.

"The immediate risk structure assessment concluded that the bridge needed to be closed for all road users to maintain public safety.

"We are currently reviewing the findings of the previous assessments and will be taking into consideration the current condition of the structure.

“We recently updated Essex County Council and Babergh District Council with updated documents relating to planning applications.”
