MATT Macey admits that some ‘honest conversations’ took place within the Colchester United squad following their draw at Morecambe.

And the U’s goalkeeper says the players will take ‘collective responsibility’ for their performances, as they bid to move up the League Two table.

Colchester head into their home clash with Tranmere Rovers tomorrow on the back of three successive draws in League Two, the latest of which was last weekend where they conceded two late goals at ten-man Morecambe but are boosted by a 2-1 midweek win over MK Dons, in the Bristol Street Motors Trophy.

Macey said: “It’s been a positive week – we always try to be positive.

“Obviously there wasn’t loads of positives last Saturday but Tuesday night was good and a win builds momentum.

“We did that earlier in the season in the cup and backed it up with a win at the weekend and it’s good for the whole squad to contribute, whether they be training or playing in games, this week.

“We’ve had a really good week and there were some honest conversations, at the start of the week to set us up nicely for the weekend.

“We talk about it a lot – we’re a team and we attack as 11 player and we defend as 11 players.

“That’s been clear from the off and it’s a team effort collectively.

“We’ve had a bit of everything this season so collectively, we’ve taken responsibility and collectively, we’re going to find a solution.

“We’ve had a lot of conversations this week around organisation, game management off the back of last weekend – that’s not to say we weren’t having those conversations earlier on in the season, it’s just it’s something that’s progressing.

“Momentum is huge in this league.

“Certainly a starting point is being hard to beat, which we’ve certainly got now.

“We’re never going to stop driving the standards here and we’re not just accepting ‘OK’.

“There is a demand within the group that we need to win games, if we want to have a really successful season.”

Macey has started every league game for Colchester so far this season, following his summer move from Portsmouth.

The 30-year-old knows that it he is part of a new-look U’s side this season but acknowledges that they need to convert performances into results.

“It’s fine margins in football; a little bit of luck but you don’t always get what you deserve,” said the former Arsenal youngster.

“At the end of the day, the result is the reality of where you’re at.

“You get better relationships as you play more games with each other and there’s a lot of new players.

“But we’re at a point now where we need to be putting that into action and getting more clean sheets, because where we want to go and the standards we set, we expect more clean sheets than we’ve had so far.

“We are developing and as time goes on, we’re getting more cohesion and better understanding and that will happen at any club, wherever it may be.

“But we’re in a position where we want to kick on and not use that as a reason for why we haven’t got so many clean sheets.”

Colchester are hoping to secure their second league win of the season tomorrow against a Tranmere side who suffered their first defeat of the season at Gillingham, last weekend.

Macey added: “Tranmere are a good team who probably had a bit of a false result, at the weekend.

“They’ve got good players and they’ll be competitive and it should be a really exciting game.”
