Dog lovers in Colchester are being urged to buy dogs and puppies from licensed breeders only.
Colchester City Council's licensing team has issued this reminder due to concerns about 'greed breeding' where breeders prioritise profit over the welfare of their dogs.
The council advises buyers to be cautious and avoid sellers without a valid licence and licence number, especially if they have sold more than three litters.
Buyers can find details of all local registered breeders, including licence numbers, on the council's website at https://tinyurl.com/y43fezm6.
The council also advises against using selling sites, recommending instead the Kennel Club's website, where breeders must meet specific welfare standards.
Colchester City Council’s animal licensing officer said: “If you are thinking of breeding dogs, please contact our team for information and advice to make sure you're doing everything properly, and all the appropriate testing has taken place so that the prospective pups have less risk of complaints such as hip dysplasia, ear and eye problems and skin issues."
Councillor Natalie Sommers, portfolio holder for communities, heritage and public protection, said: "We hope that by highlighting the issue, more residents understand why buying from a licensed breeder is so important."
