POLICE have arrested a man on suspicion of dangerous driving after a car ploughed through a wall and smashed into a family home in Colchester.

The incident occurred at 5.15am on Saturday when a grey Mercedes crashed into a property in Winnock Road, New Town.

Police later cordoned off the road and confirmed they arrested a 28-year-old on suspicion of dangerous driving, failing to stop for police, and being unfit to drive through drink or drugs.

He has been released under investigation.

The family living in the Winnock Road address were unharmed and were seen outside the semi-detached house on Saturday morning whilst police continued their enquiries.

One resident in nearby Kendall Road told the Gazette they were woken up by the speed a car that went past their house.

They said: “It was the noise of how fast the car was going that woke me up.

“When I heard the crash, I thought someone had crashed into the cars on the street, but that wasn’t the case.

“I heard it so I put my slippers on and was out within a couple of minutes - the police were already there so I think the police must have been chasing the car as it went into the house.

“One person up there said the driver had done a runner and the driver’s door was open.”

A spokesman for Essex Police said the incident did not involve a pursuit, even though the driver was arrested on suspicion of failing to stop for police.

He said: “A man has been arrested following a single vehicle collision in Colchester.

“The driver of a silver car failed to stop for officers when requested to do so on the morning of Saturday, September 21.
