AN INFANT and an adult were taken to hospital after a crash on the A12 southbound near Colchester this morning.

Four vehicles were involved in the crash which closed one lane on the A12 southbound, near Colchester Bypass, after J28 (Colchester United Jobserve Stadium) and J29 (Crown Interchange) this morning.

One lane of the road was closed at 10.45am by Essex Police and it remained closed for approximately three hours.

This caused traffic to queue for four miles, from the stadium to Langham, for multiple hours, affecting traffic around the city.

An East of England Ambulance spokesman said: "Two ambulances, two Hazardous Area Response Team vehicles and a paramedic car were sent to the London-bound A12 near Colchester this morning following reports of a multi-vehicle road traffic collision.

"Twelve patients were assessed at the scene and an infant and an adult were transported to Colchester General Hospital."

Essex Police were called to the scene at 10.45am and claim there were no serious injuries or arrests.

Residents of the city and those who drive down the A12 frequently have become fed up with the unsafe nature of the roads.

Mark Pratchett, a Colchester motorist, said: "The road isn’t fit for purpose should have been made a motorway years ago.

"More and more houses will only make accident more frequent.

"I just don’t understand why governments and local councils don’t look towards future needs."

Trevor Bridges said: "I am from Indianapolis.

"I was in my old home town of Colchester a couple weeks ago. I drove in Colchester and area several years ago for about 10 years.

"I have to say the quality of driving in Colchester was, on average, pretty poor during my recent visit."John Dey

John Dey said: "[There are] too many accidents these days. People that cause these accidents should have their licences [taken] away for good perhaps that might improve the driving of others."
