LYLE Taylor wants to give Colchester United supporters something to be proud of – and end the club’s ‘barren’ years.

Taylor has scored three goals in his last two games to help the U’s embark on a five-match unbeaten run, raising hopes among fans that this could be a fruitful season for the club after four successive years of struggle.

The 34-year-old striker joined Colchester in the summer but says he was well aware of what they have experienced over recent seasons and wants to help them turn around their fortunes, in League Two.

Taylor said: “I don’t have a goals target – what I have is a team target.

“That target is to get ourselves up and around the positions where we can affect this league and affecting this league means success and success means getting promoted.

“It what’s we all want.

“The fans deserve that for what I’ll call the barren years that they’ve had to go through and they don’t deserve that, so we have to give them something that they can be really proud of, a team and a squad that they can get behind.

"Then results are the biggest thing, because we won’t always play well but we can still get results when we don’t play well.

“You have to understand what you’re stepping into, when you’re stepping into a football club.

“When I’ve walked in here, I’ve learnt what’s happened over the last four years and I’ve seen where we’ve finished and the points tally.

“I think in my quite reserved opinion this club can be better and should be better.

“Now it’s up to us in that dressing room to provide better.”

Taylor racked up a special milestone for Colchester at the weekend, scoring the 100th and 101st league goals of his career in the 3-0 win over Tranmere Rovers.

“It was a really, really proud moment for me and I had all of my family here to see that,” said the former AFC Bournemouth and Nottingham Forest striker.

“To hit a milestone like that, from being an 18-year-old told I’m never going to make it is special.

“It’s a moment to savour.

“They were two good striker’s goals.

“I’m really pleased to get on the end of those and get into those areas but without the service, I’m just one idiot stood in the box!

“The boy (Samson Tovide) can cross a ball – we also saw it at Morecambe.

“He’s a very caring crosser of the ball.

“The second ball from Owura (Edwards) is a really good pickout and as it’s coming across, I’ve seen Samson out of the corner of my eye and I’ve said ‘Lyle’s’ and he’s left it, which is really good, because a lot of strikers wouldn’t do that and they’d be quite selfish in that area and in that position.

“But Samson wasn’t and he thoroughly deserved his goal – it was a really unselfish performance from him and I thought he was absolutely brilliant.”

Colchester’s win over Tranmere lifted them up the League Two table, ahead of their trip to play Walsall on Saturday lunchtime.

Taylor added: “It was a really strong performance.

“It’s all about giving our fans something to get behind, something that they can be proud of.

“We did that against Tranmere and their support was absolutely fantastic.

“If we produce more performances like that, then the results will follow.

“We took the really horrible lessons from last week and we’ve done the job properly, this week.”
