It's by no means recent, but Colchester's impressive scene for music, arts, and culture continues to grow.

I've showcased thousands of events through the Keep Colchester Cool project I launched in 2009.

Now, I'll bring the best events to you each week which I recommend checking out.

Here are my five recommendations for music, arts, and culture in Colchester in the week ahead.

Balkan Hill bring a fusion of Eastern European Gypsy Folk, Jazz, and Klezmer music to Queen Street Brewhouse on Saturday.

Their unique sound also draws on Scottish and Irish Folk, Jazz, Blues, Pop, and Americana influences.

They open for the Bavarian-style Oompah Dee Doo Band, making it a perfect evening of music for Andy Skene’s Oktoberfest.

Starts at 7pm. Free Entry.

On Sunday, Art of the Roadz brings its Whose Got Bars? Rap Battle to The Commons Community Kitchen and Café at The Minories.

With a judging panel featuring special guests, prizes include a headline set, cash, and Gassed Clothing.

It’s a great opportunity for Colchester’s MCs, rappers, and spoken word artists to showcase their skills and network.

Starts at 6pm. Free Entry.

Mike Leigh’s cult classic Abigail’s Party starts this Wednesday at The Mercury Theatre.

This suburban comedy first premiered in the 1970s and has become a timeless hit, exploring themes of social awkwardness, middle-class aspirations, and interpersonal tensions.

The Mercury’s latest production offers a fresh take, with performances running from October 2 to October 12.

Tickets are priced between £15.50 and £30.50.

Pianist and BAFTA-nominated film producer Melissa Parmenter will perform at Colchester Arts Centre on Thursday.

Known for her innovative classical fusion, Parmenter blends piano and cello into stunning compositions.

Having gained critical acclaim for her music in films and albums, this performance promises to be a captivating evening.

Doors open at 7.30pm and tickets are £12.

The Kubricks, a brilliant seven-piece ska band, will perform at Three Wise Monkeys on Friday.

Famed for their unique ska-reggae-pop sound, the band has supported legendary acts such as UB40 and Bad Manners and has long been adopted by Colchester music fans.

Support is from Ska Town Syndicate.

Doors open at 8pm. Advance tickets are £12, with door tickets priced at £14.50.
