A HUGE tree thought to be more than 100 years old has fallen in Colchester narrowly missing a nearby care home.

The Red Oak tree which stood near the Kendall’s Almshouses, in Military Road, fell to the ground on Friday.

It is understood the disease meripilus giganteus caused the tree to fall after the creamy white shelf-like fungus weakened the tree's roots.

The fungal infection causes white rot to affect the roots of the tree, making them brittle and soft, which can cause them to fracture near the stem.

Residents in the area have been left upset after finding the tree laying on the ground, claiming views of the area will be changed forever.

Kathy Hutton, who lives in the area, said: "I spoke to a couple of the residents who said that no one was hurt and no property was touched.

"One resident said she saw it happen and the fall was slow then a big crash down. It's a beautiful old tree probably over 100 years old."

Kathy said her walks to the shop will not be the same without the iconic tree.

She said: "I have only lived in area just under three years but I love trees and this was a beautiful one.

"I loved walking by the tree on my way to Aldi, the view won't be the same now."

Councillor Sam Mclean said he is glad the tree did not cause any damage to any buildings or people.

He said: “I’m relieved that no one was injured and that there wasn’t significant property damage.

“The tree was beautiful and will surely be missed by the residents of Kendall Terrace. I hope a new tree will be planted in its place to continue its legacy."
