LORD of the Rings star Sir Ian McKellen was a VIP special guest at Colchester's Mercury Theatre last night.
He dropped in to meet the cast of Abigail's Party on the show's opening night.
Sir Ian is a long-time supporter of the Mercury Theatre and is also closely associated with Mike Leigh’s cult-classic play.
He was thrilled with the production and expressed his admiration for the cast’s outstanding performances.
Talking about Sir Ian's visit, Steve Mannix, Executive Director of Mercury Theatre said:
“It was lovely to welcome Sir Ian McKellen back to the Mercury, he’s a big supporter of regional theatre and we were thrilled he chose to see the show with us.”
The sparkling revival of Abigail’s Party has been met with high praise from both audiences and critics.
This modern take on the iconic 1977 comedy, known for its satirical look at middle-class life, has been lauded for its fresh direction and vibrant staging.
Directed by Jack Bradfield, the production showcases stellar performances from a talented ensemble cast, with Laura Rogers standing out as Beverly, the queen of suburbia.
Audiences have responded enthusiastically to the play's wit and relevance, cementing its success on the national tour.
Abigail's Party is at the Mercury until October 12.
