RESTAURANTS set to come to a Colchester retail park have delayed works due to a national cinema chain pulling out following a financial restructuring.
Colchester Council has confirmed that “some restaurant tenants” have decided to delay fitting-out their units at Northern Gateway Leisure Park, just off the A12, until a new cinema operator is found.
Cineworld was announced for the multimillion Northern Gateway Leisure Park back in 2021 but it was confirmed yesterday that the cinema operator “will not be able to proceed with its lease”.
The 12-screen Cineworld was going to be a crowning jewel in the leisure park.
throwing the cinema site into doubt.
In July, the cinema operator announced a restructuring plan that will involve the closure of numerous sites in the UK,The council has been “closely monitoring developments” regarding Cineworld’s financial situation and announced it is exploring alternatives such as different cinema operators.
Leisure and restaurant businesses like Hollywood Bowl, Slim Chickens, Greggs, and Wendy’s are all now open at the park.
However, restaurant brands like Kaspa’s Desserts, Joyato Sushi and Grill, Taste of Italy and El Guaca are all still yet to open.
Colchester Council leader David King said: “'This is a frustrating delay, not of our making, caused by Cineworld going broke.
“What we have to do now is to respond at pace.
“Get in a new cinema operator and ensure we deliver what we promised, a rich mix of leisure, entertainment and experience.
“We are determined to do that, working with existing and prospective tenants on the site'.
Colchester resident Billy Fenton, 29, of Jarmin Road, is an avid cinemagoer who has been following the Cineworld developments.
He said: “It’s a real shame, especially as the site has been tailor made to accommodate it.
“I’m sure Northern Gateway will still be a success, however I think Cineworld pulling out will definitely affect the attraction of the site to customers.”
Northern Gateway Leisure Park falls within the Mile End ward of Colchester.
Ward councillor Martin Goss was not surprised the deal has fallen through.
He said: “Cineworld is disappointing but overall, not surprising given the recent refactoring of their debt.
“Things were in a much stronger position when the deal was signed.
“Now it is time to look forwards and get another new chain in this prestigious site.”
