NATIONAL Highways bosses are still unable to provide a final completion date for the A12 roadworks – and have said there will be more overnight closures in the coming weeks.

The announcement of unscheduled closures on Tuesday intensified questions about when the Marks Tey to Stanway resurfacing project will finally finish, with work having started on October 17, 2022.

The scheme was due to conclude at the end of last year.

When the Gazette asked National Highways exactly when the roadworks will finish, a spokesman was unable to confirm an exact timeframe.

They added there will be further overnight closures before the end of the month, though an exact timetable hasn't been set out.

He said: “Further overnight lane closures for final checks, including removal of cameras and equipment, will take place in the coming weeks.”

It is now certain the resurfacing project will have run for more than two years by the time it is finally complete.

As well as running overtime, the resurfacing has also run massively overbudget, with a Freedom of Information request revealing the scheme had cost £44.6million by the beginning of 2024.

The original cost estimate was £33.1million.
