Donnelly has made five appearances for Colchester since joining on loan in August and registered his first league start for them in their draw at his former club, Port Vale.
Fellow Colchester loanee Jamie McDonnell, who made his Football League debut for Colchester earlier this month after coming on as a second-half substitute in their 1-1 draw at Port Vale, was an unused substitute in the match.
Charlie Allen, Patrick Kelly, Justin Devenny and an own goal from Rustam Samigullin made up the scoring for the hosts.
The result leaves Northern Ireland fourth in Group F, after nine matches.
Tommy Wright's team are back in action against Luxembourg at the Emile Mayrisch Stadium in Esch-sur-Alzette, on Tuesday.
