COLCHESTER United's on-loan defender Aaron Donnelly helped Northern Ireland under-21s to a 0-0 draw against Luxembourg in their UEFA U21 Championship qualifier, on Tuesday night.

The on-loan Nottingham Forest youngster played the full 90 minutes of their final Group F match at the Emile Mayrisch Stadium in Esch-sur-Alzette.

Northern Ireland under-21s were forced to play the final stages of the game with only ten men, after midfielder Charlie Allen received a second yellow card in the 72nd minute.

Donnelly has made five appearances for Colchester since joining on loan in August and registered his first league start for them in their draw at his former club, Port Vale.

Fellow Colchester loanee Jamie McDonnell, who made his Football League debut for Colchester earlier this month after coming on as a second-half substitute in their 1-1 draw at Port Vale, was an unused substitute in the match.

The result means Northern Ireland under-21s finish fourth in Group F, after ten matches.

Donnelly and McDonnell will now return to Colchester and report for training at Florence Park tomorrow, in readiness for the U's home clash with Cheltenham Town on Saturday.
