COLCHESTER United legend Steve Foley has welcomed the launch of a new project celebrating the U’s heritage.

The Colchester United Community Foundation (CUCF), in partnership with Colchester United and backed by the Premier League Fans Fund, have launched United Through Time, a fan-led tribute which will celebrate the U’s history by encouraging supporters to share their favourite moments.

They will be crafted into a timeline that will decorate the JobServe Community Stadium, honouring the U’s history.

U’s supporters can vote for their favourite club memories and former Layer Road skipper and coach Foley, who made more than 300 league and cup appearances for Colchester between 1971 and 1981 along with having three caretaker spells in charge, says it is a great idea.

Foley, who will be at Colchester’s home game with Cheltenham Town on Saturday where fans can vote on their favourite U’s memories, said: “It’s important to recognise what’s happened in the past.

“The first thing I think of is the Leeds win – that was unbelievable.

“That would be like playing Manchester City now and I was lucky enough to be there.

“Another personal memory for me is my debut when I scored two goals and bottled it when we got a penalty!

“I’ve been in the game 50 years and I’m going back to my very first game!

“Another great memory is from one of the times I was caretaker manager and we went to Southend – they were top of the league and we were bottom.

“Roger Brown got sacked, so I took over and we won 2-0, so that was very good.

“I’m one of the old boys now, so it’s all memories!”

The United Through Time community project invites supporters to vote on their most memorable moment supporting the club, with the top-voted memories then forming a stadium timeline.

From iconic matches to legendary players, it is a unique chance for fans to shape how the club’s history is celebrated.

Fans will get the chance to help bring the United Through Time project to life at one of the voting stands at the JobServe Community Stadium, prior to the Cheltenham game on Saturday.

There will be voting stations available in the Legends Bar (West Stand), South Stand Concourse and Eddie’s Nest (East Stand), from 1.45pm until 3pm.

Each stand will be staffed by either a CUCF staff member, BWA representative or CUSA volunteer, who are excited to hear your stories and guide you through a quick one-minute survey.

Supporters are encouraged to bring along any memorabilia showcasing the U’s history to share with the team at each stand.
