COLCHESTER United head coach Danny Cowley has provided a fitness update as he prepares his side for a return to action against Cheltenham Town this weekend.

The U's have had a two-week break in League Two, with three of their players having been away on international duty.

Lyle Taylor flew to St Vincent to play two games for Montserrat against Bonaire in Concacaf Nations League B Group A, while the club's on-loan Nottingham Forest pair Aaron Donnelly and Jamie McDonnell were part of the Northern Ireland under-21 squad for their UEFA U21 Championship qualifiers at home to Azerbaijan and away to Luxembourg.

Colchester head coach Danny Cowley said: "Lyle actually flew back through the night Monday for Tuesday morning.

"He's fine; he was back in today (Thursday), typical Lyle - you always hear him before you see him!

"It's great to have him back and he's got such a great personality.

"He's in a good place.

"Aaron Donnelly and Jamie McDonnell were a little bit later, after they played on Tuesday against Luxembourg.

"They didn't arrive home until midnight last night but we pulled them out of bed this morning and they trained!

"Aaron actually played left wing-back against Luxembourg which is a little bit out of position for him, so his numbers were pretty high.

"We managed his load and he did a little bit of an adapted session.

"He'll be better for that and hopefully, he'll be able to train fully tomorrow."

Meanwhile, U's boss Cowley says Owura Edwards and Teddy Bishop are both making 'good progress' following their recent injuries.

Edwards has missed Colchester's last three games with a hamstring injury, while midfielder Bishop has been missing for the same period due to an ankle problem sustained in the defeat at Walsall, on September 28.

“They’re making really good progress," added Cowley.

“Both are back on the grass.

“They’re at slightly different places in the rehab but we’re hopeful that they’re going to be back involved, sooner rather than later."
