COLCHESTER United fans will get the chance to share their favourite memories of supporting the club this weekend - and boss Danny Cowley has vowed to strive to create new magic moments.

Fans will get the chance to help bring the United Through Time project to life at the U’s game against Cheltenham Town at the JobServe Community Stadium tomorrow.

The fan-led tribute, launched by the Colchester United Community Foundation (CUCF) in partnership with Colchester United and backed by the Premier League Fans Fund, will celebrate the U’s past by encouraging supporters to share their cherished moments.

Cowley said: “The club has such a brilliant history.

“I can remember them being in the Championship in the mid-2000s.

“I also remember Colchester staying up against Preston, against the odds – I remember listening to it on BBC Essex!

“The club has had a brilliant history but not so much success in recent times and the aim is to try to create something that the supporters can be really proud of and really connect to and be associated with.

“I think if we can do that – and I feel like the connection is growing – then together, we can achieve something.

“I always think that if you get enough like-minded people in the same room with the same focus and the same goal, then you can good things can be achieved.”

Cowley grew up as a West Ham United supporter, cheering them on from the Upton Park terraces alongside his father and younger brother, Nicky.

However, he also remembers watching Colchester United games at Layer Road on Friday nights.

“My Dad played and had a good career and I can remember being in his changing room and them preparing for the games and the managers and the way they talked to the players,” added Cowley.

“I’d probably always be outside or somewhere in the vicinity.

“I can really remember sitting on the wooden benches, watching the game.

“I also remember going to West Ham for the first-ever time; we played Oxford United and Tony Cottee scored in the 83rd minute and Upton Park erupted.

“I think Nicky was only about three or four and he started crying because the noise shocked him!

“We would have fish and chips after the game from the Brothers Fish ‘n’ Chip shop and my Dad convinced us that they were the best fish and chips in the world!

“Then we’d get a bit older and he’d come home from work and sometimes he’d have tickets and they’d be in his suit pocket and we’d jump in the car and make our way there; we’d always be waiting to see who could see the floodlights first.

“Dan managed my team and Nicky’s team – one of us would play in the morning and one in the afternoon.

“Mum would be cutting up all the oranges and doing all the subs and secretarial roles.”

From iconic matches to legendary players, the United Through Time project is a unique chance for fans to shape how the club’s history is celebrated.

There will be voting stations available in the Legends Bar (West Stand), South Stand Concourse and Eddie’s Nest (East Stand), from 1.45pm until 3pm.

Supporters are encouraged to bring along any memorabilia showcasing the U’s history to share with the team at each stand.
