A TASTY food trend from Korea is now set to make waves in Colchester after a cafe launched the unusual offering.

Korean corn dogs have taken social media by storm and have finally arrived in the city.

Charlie Spencer, 41, started his venture by teaming up with the Go4 cafe at the Old Heath Recreation Ground, which has been welcomed with open arms by residents.

At the successful launch event on Saturday, Mr Spencer’s business gave away almost 150 free corn dogs with orders made at the cafe.

He said: “I think it was a good success for the first soft launch, we made £500 and gave away 147 corn dogs.”

Mr Spencer has run a popular fudge business since 2015 and was a regular at food festivals and events in the area.

“Last year that I was working for a company doing festivals and there was an opening position to sell another sausage related type food,” Mr Spencer said.

“I had a little think about it and as Korean corn dogs are a trending thing on social media, it kind of popped up.

“I did some recipes at home and thought, ‘Oh my God, this is really quite tasty, I could sell these. I think a a lot of people are going to take enjoyment for it’.”

The specialty, which will be a regular item at the cafe and is now available for delivery, took some time to perfect, but thanks to Mr Spencer’s passion for all things cooking, received only good feedback.

He said: “The thing that I like most is seeing these customers clearly enjoying the corn dogs, but come back with their wallet to order again and again.

"That's music to my ears really because it most certainly tells me I'm doing something right.”

Teaming up with the Go4 cafe is also a cause close to his heart, as the charity is helping autistic people being brought into the workplace.

Following his son’s diagnosis and the family’s struggles to find appropriate support in education, being part of a dedicated community project is very important to him.

He said: “I think it's just a brilliant thing and I'm so happy that we can hopefully be more productive to help the community a little bit more.

“Over the winter, the cafe will also be open, to be a warm space for people to come and say hello, and stay, just to get out of the house if need be.”
