A POPULAR Colchester restaurant has taken up a previously vacant High Street building and is so “happy” about the move and business is “thriving”.

The Indian and Nepalese restaurant, Yak & Yeti relocated from its former long time premises in Magdalen Street to 101 High Street last month on October 18.

Previously, 101 High Street was home to The Brick Lane Bagel Co, a business which launched in May 2023.

The Gazette even visited the “clean and modern” Brick Lane Bagel Co after it opened to try the “high quality” salt beef bagel.

However, its success was short lived given that the business shut down at the end of last year, leaving the unit vacant.

Yak & Yeti wanted to move to the High Street for more exposure and to have a unit which is easier to manage.

Mr Aryal, 31, works as a full-time aerospace engineer, is the owner of Yak & Yeti, and runs it as a family effort alongside his brother and other members of the family.

Speaking about why the restaurant wanted to move from Magdalen Street to the High Street, Mr Aryal said: “The main reason is because our dad, has been working in the industry for 25 years.

"That place was getting old, we wanted something nicer, smaller and easy to manage.

“We wanted to get more exposure as well – we wanted to be in the heart of Colchester, it’s a good location.

“The previous location became too big for us to manage.

“We went to Brick Lane Bagel Co for a bagel and I kind of knew the intention of the owners, we thought it was a good location,

“We were on the lookout for the right place, something worth pursuing.”

Over the years, Yak & Yeti has become well-known as a fantastic option for vegetarians and vegans thanks to its courses such as the Mismas Sabzi, Pindi Chole, Bombay Aloo, Biryani, and more.

It also has plenty of meat and seafood-based curry dishes that go down a storm with customers.

Since opening its doors in the High Street, Mr Aryal has confirmed business is doing very well.

He said: “The team is really happy and excited; we are still finding our feet.

“We are getting lots of walk ins which we weren’t getting in Magdalen Street.

“Lots of people are really happy we’ve moved there, and it has been really positive

“It’s a much smaller place and everything is new.

“In the next few weeks we’ll fully settle in.

“Business wise it is definitely thriving.

“People are going out and eating, we are seeing the trend it is definitely upwards and positive.
