A family running a popular fabric store near Braintree has thanked its customers as it prepares to shut its doors for the final time.
And Sew On Fabrics, in Blake End, Rayne, will be closing at the end of the year after more than three decades in business.
The family-run business was opened by Natalie Walker’s mother Cathy in 1991 and was joined by her a few years later.
Natalie said: “My mother and I loved working alongside each other and we increased the business together, offering a variety of craft classes and also trading at various exhibitions around Essex.
“Losing my mother nine years ago was a huge loss and I have endeavoured to keep the shop going for as long as possible, with the help of my wonderful staff and even my 16-year-old daughter who helps at weekends, however, it is sadly time to close this chapter.”
The business said the economic conditions have made it "impossible" for the store to commit to another five years, as its lease at the Blake House Craft Centre is up for renewal in December.
Speaking on shutting the business, Natalie said: “The online market is very difficult to compete with, not least because of the ever-increasing costs of postage and large platforms such as Amazon offering free delivery.
“The main attraction to our business was the ability for people to come and view the fabrics in person, and to ensure it was exactly what they wanted.
“In addition to this, we offer in-depth advice to people to assist with their sewing projects and this kind of personal service cannot be matched online.”
She continued: “We have customers who have been with us since the start and we cannot thank them enough for their support across the years.
“No matter how long people have shopped here, or whether they have just recently found us, we are grateful for each and everyone, and thank them for keeping us going this long.
“Please continue to support small businesses wherever possible because it is more important now than ever before.”
The site's last day of trading will be Saturday, December 21, and a number of discounts will be offered over the last two months.
