A HUGE collection of historic poppies from all over the world has returned to a charity shop in Colchester.
Heather Johnson started researching the history of Remembrance poppies following a conversation with a Canadian lady, who asked how well-known the inventor, Anna Guérin, was in the UK.
Learning that Anna was merely mentioned by name, Mrs Johnson embarked on a research journey which ended with her writing a book about the French woman and her poppies.
She said: “I started with one because I was researching Anna Guérin, who had the idea of an inter-allied poppy day. I've been trying to start a timeline as when I started collecting them there was nothing to help me date them.
“New information comes to light regularly and it enlightens me. I’m not the only one with a collection; there are people like me preserving the history.”
Mrs Johnson’s collection includes original poppies from 1921, the ones that were made by Madame Guérin herself.
Last year, the collection was displayed at the St Helena Books, Brew and Boutique in Stanway ahead of Remembrance Day.
“The St Helena shop was so enthusiastic about the display last year so it’s lovely to return,” said Mrs Johnson.
“I don’t have a personal connection with the Hospice but I know people who have benefitted from their care. I know the good it does and I know exactly where I want to be at some point.
“Everyone is so friendly at the shop and it is rare to leave without a purchase of one thing or another. It’s only on special occasions that we buy a cake but the coffee is very good.”
This year, the collection includes poppies from around the globe, adding to the historic treasure and the legacy of Anna Guérin.
Mrs Johnson’s extensive research can be read in her book The Poppy Lady, as well as on her website, alongside a timeline about the red flowers we wear today.
The Books, Brew and Boutique shop has been recently crowned East of England winner in the UK’s Favourite Charity Shop Awards and staff are hopeful to return with a win from the national awards.
The poppy display will be located at the St Helena BBB shop at Colchester's Angora Business Park until November 12.
