A new CCTV camera has been installed at St Botolph’s Priory in Colchester city centre.
The "state-of-the-art" camera is part of ongoing efforts to reduce antisocial behaviour in the city.
St Botolph’s Priory, which dates to around 1100 AD, has recently become a frequent spot for street drinkers and those engaging in antisocial activities, according to the council.
To tackle this, a pan-tilt-zoom (PTZ) camera has been installed, offering 360-degree views and high-definition zoom with a neighbourhood warden observing the area in a bid to deter such activities.
Councillor Natalie Sommers, portfolio holder for communities, heritage, and public protection, said: "Once again, I’d like to thank the PFCC for their funding to help us reduce ASB in Colchester.
"Without it, tackling this problem would be very difficult indeed.
"The installation of CCTV in St Botolph’s Priory will help the council’s Neighbourhood Wardens in targeting their patrols, moving on street drinkers, and stopping ASB before it begins.
"Our residents’ safety is of the utmost importance to us, and the additional camera really does help."
Colchester City Council's Community Safety Team obtained funding for the camera from the Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner (PFCC).
The council’s commercial arm, Colchester Amphora Trading, installed the camera, making use of existing CCTV infrastructure and ultrafast broadband networks across the city.
St Botolph’s Church also allowed the camera to be mounted on the more modern part of the building, painted to blend in with the exterior.
Neighbourhood warden patrols will continue throughout the city, assisted by Essex Police, Titan Security, and citywide CCTV coverage.
Ms Sommers added: "Collaboration with partners to achieve our shared goals will always be a top priority, ensuring Colchester continues to be a safe and welcoming place to live, work and visit for all."
Any incidents of antisocial behaviour can be reported to the police online, or by calling 999 for emergencies and 101 for non-emergencies.
The public can also share their views in a PFCC survey on policing and community safety at smartsurvey.co.uk/s/AVQK66, which will influence the Essex Police and Essex County Fire & Rescue funding process for the financial year 2025/26.
