A CAR ploughed into the entrance of a supermarket in Colchester leaving two people needing treatment in hospital.  

Emergency services were called to the East of England Co-op store in Iceni Way on Tuesday morning following reports of an incident shortly after 8am. 

A car had crashed into the front entrance of the shop and got stuck in the automatic doors at the entrance. 

Essex Police, Essex Fire and Rescue Service and ambulance services were all called to the scene.

An East of England Ambulance Service spokesman confirmed that the air ambulance had been called for assistance. 

He said: “Two ambulances, a paramedic car and Essex and Herts Air Ambulance were called to Iceni Way Colchester following reports that a vehicle had collided with a building. 

“Two patients were transported by road ambulance to Colchester Hospital.” 

The fire and rescue services confirmed that one person was trapped in the car that had collided with the building. 

Firefighters assisted with freeing the casualty. 

A spokesman for the fire and rescue service said: “Firefighters were called to an incident near Iceni Way, Colchester at 8.15am.  

“On arrival, crews confirmed that it was one vehicle which had collided with a building, with one casualty trapped in the car.

“Firefighters freed the casualty and made the scene safe by 9.48am. The casualty was left in the care of the Ambulance Service.” 

The incident has left the community shaken, with councillors worried for their residents. 

Shrub End councillor Michael Spindler said: “Hopefully, the incident was not serious, and I hope everyone involved will be alright. 

“There should be a conversation about safety measures in the car park to prevent these types of incidents.”
