A NEW documentary will explore how a “cruel and senseless” murdered his employers and then tried to get away with it.

Discovery+ is covering the case of Luke D’Wit, who was found guilty after a six-week trial at Chelmsford Crown Court at the beginning of 2024.

The IT worker killed Stephen, 61, and Carol Baxter, 64, a couple from Mersea Island, to whom he had become "like a son".

D'Wit worked at the couple’s business and became a friend the family trusted.

The Baxters were found dead in their home on Easter 2023 by their daughter Elena, who called the emergency services.

In the documentary 999 Murderer Calling the call made by Elena is played.

D'Wit later takes the call over and tells the call handler the couple were sitting in their chairs "stiff cold".

During the trial, the prosecution claimed that D’Wit, of Churchfields, West Mersea, administered a fatal dose of fentanyl to the couple and watched them die through a mobile device.

The court heard how he created a web of different personas to befriend Carol and the rest of the family, including a doctor who gave specific health advice.

The court was also told that D'Wit rewrote the Baxters' will to make himself a beneficiary and in control over the family bathmat business.

The 35-year-old was sentenced on March 22 to 37 years behind bars by Judge Nicholas Lavender.

Before passing his sentence, Judge Lavender said: "You ended their lives and brought grief and misery to the lives of others.

"All of the family have made statements where they have eloquently and movingly expressed their profound loss and suffering."

Following his sentence, Essex Police confirmed that a review of D'Wit's father's death would take place in case he had also killed him without being detected.

D'Wit sourced the fentanyl for the Baxter's fatal dose from patches which had originally been prescribed to his father Vernon and which he did not dispose of after his death in 2021.

The series will be available to watch on Discovery+ from Friday, November 15 onwards.
