FAMILIES will have to wait months before enjoying Leisure World’s outdoor rapids again as the attraction is set to remain closed until next year.
The rapids were closed during the summer alongside the flumes, with both requiring repairs.
While the flumes have now reopened, Colchester Council has revealed the rapids will not open until next year.
A spokesman said: “Due to temperatures over the winter months, it will not be possible for repair works to begin on the rapids until Spring 2025.
“Our main focus has been on the improvement and repair works to the popular flumes, which we are delighted have now reopened.
“We understand the disappointment these closures have caused and thank people for their continued patience and understanding.”
The news comes as the flumes reopened following an extended period of maintenance.
The water slides have undergone improvements to enhance the rider experience.
They were shut in July following a ‘routine health and safety check’ which revealed the ride surface had deteriorated and required repair.
Colchester Council said while the former surface had not compromised safety, continued use without repair could have led to ‘significant deteriorating’ and posed a risk to users.
The repairs works included a complete relining of the internal surface of the flumes to help visitors enjoy a ‘smoother, faster, and even more exciting ride’.
Martin Goss, Colchester councillor responsible for leisure, said: “We are delighted to announce that the flumes will be ready to splash back into action.
“This investment not only improves safety and the quality of the rides but also ensures our visitors have the best experience possible.
“We can’t wait to welcome families back to enjoy the thrill of the flumes and our other fantastic pool attractions.”
The improvements are part of a broader investment of the Leisure Pool facilities.
More than £70,000 is due to be pumped into the outdoor rapids as well as the leisure pool area.
