DANNY Cowley acknowledges why Colchester United are being labelled League Two’s draw specialists.

But the U’s boss is not a big fan of the tag - and wants to turn his side into a winning team.

Colchester have drawn eight league matches so far this season, more than any other side in English football’s top four divisions.

The U’s have shared the spoils in five of their last seven league games and this weekend visit seventh-placed Grimsby Town, whose first league draw of the season came at Newport County, last Saturday.

Cowley is eager to see his Colchester side turn their draws into wins and move up the table, starting with a victory over David Artell's side.

Cowley said: “I don’t like the term draw specialists but I am starting to think like we are as it’s eight draws now.

"Probably at least five or six of those, we feel we should have won on the balance of play but haven’t quite been able to find those wins and that’s something that we’re working hard to find.

“When we first came in, the team had suffered a lot of defeats in the first half of the season and we’ve worked hard to become a competitive team in the division, but now we want to become a winning team and that’s the next thing that we have to add.

“We need to continue to work with and against the ball and keep trying to find that consistency.

“We want to try and score the first goal, that would be nice, hence the reason we’ve been chasing games.”

Colchester will set out for Grimsby this afternoon, after a training session this morning.

For U’s fans making the trip up to Blundell Park, it will be a very early start with the game kicking off at 12.30pm due to it being shown live on Sky Sports +.

It is the first of two successive lunchtime away games for Colchester, with a long journey to play Fleetwood Town to follow, seven days later.

“I feel sorry for our supporters, because I can only imagine what time they’ll have to get up to get up to Grimsby and then up to Fleetwood, for those midday kick-offs,” added Cowley.

“My heart is with them but for us, our pre-match organisation changes ever so slightly but we have an opportunity to get ahead of the fixtures, put a really good performance together and hopefully, a positive result.

“There’s a lot to admire about Grimsby and we’ll have to be at our very best, on Saturday.”
