MUCH like one of his eye-catching runs, Owura Edwards’ season was just gathering momentum when he was dealt a cruel injury blow.

The skilful Colchester United winger’s season was halted by an untimely hamstring injury during an eventful second half at Walsall back in September, when it was seemingly not only his own season that was interrupted.

Not only did the U’s concede three times in the second half to lose 4-0 at Bescot Stadium at a time when their campaign was gathering pace; they also lost both Edwards and Teddy Bishop, two players who had been finding some good form.

Thankfully, both Edwards and Bishop are both back on the grass and aiming to pick up where they left off.

After making a second-half comeback for Colchester against Bradford City last weekend, the 23-year-old winger is now pushing for a start against Grimsby Town, tomorrow lunchtime.

Edwards said: “The injury stopped my momentum but I just can’t wait to get going again.

“I was in a really good place before the injury but things happen and now it’s about moving forward.

“I’ve been on the grass for two or three weeks now and it’s been a good, steady build-up.

“I trust our medical team to judge things but I right now, I feel physically very good, so it’s all going to plan.

“I’m ready and I can’t wait to get going and help the boys out.

“Every moment I go on the pitch, I try to make a difference.

“I want to win and I want to help the team do well, so that’s why I have to be ready for every opportunity I get.”

Edwards tomorrow heads back to Grimsby, where he spent five months on loan in the 2020-21 season.

The former Bristol City youngster made 20 league and cup appearances for the Mariners and is looking forward to returning to Blundell Park.

“It was a decent loan spell, under Ian Holloway,” said Edwards, who has made 19 league and cup appearances for the U’s since returning to them on a permanent basis in the 2023 summer transfer window.

“It was during the lockdown season that I was at Grimsby, on loan from Bristol City.

“It was in the season when the fans weren’t allowed in so I didn’t get to experience Blundell Park with the fans in the stadium but I’d be happy to experience that, on Saturday.”

Colchester head to Grimsby on the back of five draws in their last seven games, aiming to move away from the League Two relegation zone.

Edwards added: “We know what we’re capable of as a team.

“We haven’t achieved what we wanted to achieve this season so far but there’s plenty of time and we just have to take it game by game and keep performing every game.

“We need to find it in us to approach every game with that winning mentality to go on the pitch and win the game.”
