Firefighters have rescued an "frightened" dog that was stuck on a roof in icy conditions in Essex.

Crews were called to Malyons, in Pitsea, at around 10am today, after reports of a St Bernard dog stuck on a roof.

The dog was spotted by a concerned neighbour, who noticed the animal on the icy, slippery roof while the owners were out. They immediately called the fire service for help.

It is believed the dog had climbed onto a roof after getting out through a small window.

Crews arrived and quickly assessed the situation, placing a ladder against the roof in case the dog slipped.

Using treats to coax the dog to move, firefighters carefully encouraged it to make its way back through the open window.

Once safely inside, firefighters secured the window to prevent the dog from escaping again, just as the owners returned home. The rescue was completed in around 30 minutes.

Watch Manager Geoff Wheal said: "This was a great example of teamwork to bring the situation to a safe conclusion.

"The dog was understandably frightened, but with patience and a few treats, we were able to guide him back inside without any harm.”
