A CHRISTMAS-LOVING resident is bringing his incredible display back as he aims to add to the thousands raised for charity.
Paul Howard’s house in Colchester turns into a winter wonderland every December as the driving instructor by trade sets up a special lights display.
For almost 25 years, his home has become an attraction in Parsons Heath, welcoming families on their walks throughout the festive period.
The idea to raise money for charity came after one of his students suffered a stroke of fate.
Paul, 62, said: “A young lad, who was a student of mine several years ago, sadly lost a parent in a crash and the air ambulance was there to help.
“They have been such a great help, going all over the place, and someone once said to me ‘You have such a lovely display, would you like to use it for charity’, so I thought this is a worthy cause to support.”
For 11 years, all donations have been helping the Essex and Herts Air Ambulance, and the special display has raised more than £7,000 in total.
The money is funding the charity’s vital services, saving lives by delivering pre-hospital emergency medical care in Essex and Hertfordshire all year round.
Over the years, Paul has added more and more lights to his display and even built his own props over the years.
He said: “First it was just the front of my house, then my garage and then the sides of my home.
“It just grows and grows and I keep adding more. I even have a sleigh and a Polar Express, where children and parents can take pictures.
“It is lovely to see all the happy faces, them having a good time, and I feel like this is what Christmas is all about.”
His neighbour's have also embraced the display and Paul is thinking of expanding his set-up, as long as there are plugs available.
Setting up the display takes him two weeks, but he is enjoying seeing families taking pictures with their children.
The display will be on until early January, and a festive switch-on will take place on Saturday, November 30, at 4.30pm.
The lights will shine every day between 4pm and 10pm in Churnwood Road.
