I’VE been underwhelmed by The Pigeon Detective’s first two albums.
Emergency and Wait For Me were great in places but I never felt they really hit the heights.
So I was keen to see if they could fly any higher live on the 4Music Stage.
And I’m pleased to say I was impressed.
Matt Bowman is an engaging frontman and the West Yorkshire band’s songs go hand in hand with a festival sing-a-long.
Album title track This Is An Emergency got the crowd joining in from the off.
It was followed up with I Found Out and I’m Not Gonna Take This which prompted Bowman to tell the crowd it was one of the band’s most special moments of the summer.
Going back to Bowman, he was swinging his mic with the skill you’d expect to see from Indiana Jones wielding a lasso and launching himself into the crowd with vigour at every opportunity.
You could tell the crowd were enjoying it because for the first time in the day I was showered with beer from a cup launched towards the stage.
It is a strange phenomenon that the level of appreciation for a band can be measured in how many objects are being thrown towards the performers.
Bowman replicated the thanks by lobbing and kicking bottles of water into the crowd.
The set bounded into a crescendo with I’m Not Sorry.
Bowman attempted at a rock’n’roll finale but was rather too careful when he knocked over a drum.
A rousing set all the same.
