ANGRY residents say they are fed up with the lack of action by council bosses in repairing a road they have described as “highly dangerous”.

People living near to Clarke’s Road, Dovercourt, say some of the potholes are so bad that an entire bike wheel and part of the frame could be fitted inside them.

David and Sheila Salter, of nearby Oulton Close, said they had complained to Essex County Council online after becoming increasingly concerned about a particularly large hole in the road.

Mr Salter said: “There were several along Clarke’s Road, but one in particular had got really bad. In my opinion it was highly dangerous and needed urgent attention.

“It was so deep that I put my bike tyre in it, and it covered the whole wheel, tyre and the rim of the cycle wheel.

“Anyone crossing the road at night-time could have fallen in it and broken their leg.”

The Gazette reported last week how Clarke’s Road resident Maria Hinks, 56, endured a four-hour wait for an X-ray at Colchester General Hospital after tripping on a pothole in Dovercourt.

Sheila Dommett, 67, of Dockfield Avenue, Dovercourt, said she had complained to the county about the road the week before the accident, on December 6, but that it was not until after the incident the council arrived to fill the holes.

A spokesman for Essex County Council said: “We encourage members of the public to report highways defects either via a website reporting system or our highways hotline and we always investigate any reports.”
