IT is said there is no such thing as a free lunch.
But those who say it have not met Joy Watson, landlady of the Ship Inn, in Valley Road, Great Clacton, who offered a free three-course Christmas dinner to lonely older people in the district.
A total of 24 pensioners responded to her offer, and enjoyed food, company and entertainment on Tuesday afternoon.
Miss Watson said: “It has been really good.
“The pensioners looked as though they really enjoyed it.”
She said she had been overwhelmed by the number of people who volunteered to help out.
Singer Ceasar the Geezer crooned his way through some classic hits to entertain the guests, and bar staff offered to work for free.
Miss Watson’s mother-in-law, Natalie Tarr, who provided the inspiration for the day after holding a similar event a pub in Chelmsford, was also there.
Miss Watson said she would definitely consider running a similar event next year.
“I think I would do it again next year – we have all really enjoyed it.”
