A NEW cafe and art gallery could open its doors soon.
Council planners gave permission for a change of use on the retail premises in High Street, Wivenhoe, to allow it to become a gourmet grocer, cafe and art gallery.
A report to the planning committee said the property is currently vacant and the changes would not mean any external alterations.
The Tudor Tea Rooms and Village Delicatessen objected, saying the competition would be detrimental and there would be no first-floor access for disabled people.
But the applicant, Lisa Tuplin, submitted additional information saying it was something new and would not be a tea room or delicatessen.
The council also received 16 letters supporting the proposal, saying it offered an alternative to the pubs and would encourage art and culture in the town.
The planning officer’s report said it would attract more people to come to Wivenhoe, and using the Grade II listed building would help to preserve it.
