A NEW police officer has been appointed to work specifically with pub landlords in Colchester.

Neighbourhood specialist officer PC Tom Walker took on the role a few weeks ago, with the sole aim of liaising with pubs, clubs, off-licences and take-aways in the town.

He joined Essex Police two years ago, initially based in Clacton.

Over six months ago, he moved to Colchester, where he got to know the town and began building up contacts before taking on his new role.

PC Walker said: “My aim will be to proactively carry out licensing visits and problem solve if premises have particular issues.

“This will also include the off-licenses and take-aways.

“This is a two-way thing, giving them a route to raise their issues.

“From a policing perspective, if we’ve got a problem for example with a particular premises, the idea is to nip it in the bud and work together.

“My role will also see me working closely with other partners, like Trading Standards and Colchester Council, to try and tackle issues, such as under-age drinking and littering.”

He takes over the job at a time when there is a concerted effort to crack down on violence in the town, particularly issues related to alcohol.

Despite the challenges, PC Walker is relishing the task.

“I’m really looking forward to it,” he said.

“The difference between being a police constable and doing this means I have a lot more time to work with the premises and address any issues they may have.

“My aim is to make Colchester a better place to be at night.

“It is already a safe place to live and visit, but I want it to be an even safer place.”
