SHOPS and businesses are being urged to put safety first over the festive period.
As people take advantage of huge discounts in stores – and that is before the January sales have begun – Essex County Fire and Rescue Service (ECFRS) is asking store managers to ensure safety procedures are up-to-date.
ECFRS’ divisional officer Andy Stapleton said: “At this time of year, the risks of fire increase for both homes and businesses, but with the increased number of people coming through the doors of shops, pubs and restaurants, the consequences could be tragic.
“It is important that the responsible person for each business makes sure that all staff, including temporary Christmas staff, know what to do in the event of a fire.
“All Christmas decorations must comply with British or European safety standards and employers need to make sure escape routes are kept clear and not blocked by extra stock.”
Anyone wanting more information on staying safe this Christmas and New Year is urged to call the fire service on 01376 576271 or visit essexfire.gov.uk
