I agree with Robert Johnstone’s argument (Call to build new secondary school, Gazette August 3) about the need for a senior school in Mile End, to alleviate children being transported distances to school.
However, I would seek clarification on one or two matters. He talks of the distances to the Gilberd or St Helena schools, I would suggest the distance from Thomas, Lord Audley School to Stanway is on a par, or possibly a greater distance.
Congestion, according to Essex County Council, is not a problem for those in the south of the town, therefore why should it be for those in the north?
The reason for closing the schools in the south is too few pupils – yet now we hear there will be too many and another school will be needed, albeit in the north.
We told Essex County Council it was and would be an “absolute necessity” to retain the schools in the south of the town, for the reasons outlined by councillor Johnstone.
I wonder what influence Mr Johnstone has in the north of the town that is not available in the south?
