Clacton Carnival’s 28th annual donkey derby attracted hundreds of spectators for the fun night of thrills and spills.
A dozen donkeys, supplied by Guildford-based Hunt’s Racing Donkeys, took part in seven races, with youngsters from local riding schools holding the reins, showing off their riding skills and trying to be first across the finishing line.
Organiser Brian Warren said about 500 spectators turned up to watch and enjoy a flutter, even though the rain started just as people were coming out for the evening.
“The rain stopped and we had a very good evening,” he added.
“When we opened the gates, people came in with their brollies, but the rain eased off and everyone enjoyed the evening.”
Mr Warren runs the event with his wife, Sheila. He is proud of the fact the carnival donkey derby is the only such event in the district and always attracts families and race fans for a fun night out.
The event also brings in money for local charities through sponsorship, gate takings and the tote.
