A COLCHESTER manager who nearly died in a car crash last year is to spend an hour standing on the fourth plinth in London’s Trafalgar Square, to raise money for an ambulance charity.
John Mawdsley, operations manager for TBG Learning Colchester, based in Southway, aimed to raise awareness and funds for the Midlands Air Ambulance with a stint on the plinth next month.
He is one of 2,400 people chosen to spend an hour in the spotlight on the plinth as part of artist Antony Gormley’s One & Other project.
Mr Mawdsley, 31, from Felixstowe, will be on the plinth from noon until 1pm on Wednesday, September 16.
He said: “At first, I thought this would be a bit of fun, and that I’d dress up as Superman or something. Then I realised I could do something more productive, so I will be raising awareness and funds for the Midlands Air Ambulance, which saved my life last year after a car crash.
“Air ambulances provide an essential service to such a wide area of the UK all without Government or lottery funding.”
