THOUSANDS of homes will be getting new bathrooms and kitchens, thanks to a £25million upgrade project.

Greenfields houses and flats across Halstead and the surrounding villages will be benefiting from a five-year decent homes improvement programme.

From December 2010, about £13.5million will be spent on homes in Halstead and Earls Colne, Colne Engaine and White Colne.

Greenfields Community Housing will be fitting 850 new kitchens, 850 new bathrooms, rewiring 500 homes, putting new central heating systems in 300 homes and electrical heating in 100 homes.

Work should be completed by March 2012. By the end of this month, £11.5million will have been spent on homes in some of the town’s 30 surrounding villages.

Money will have been spent on 791 new kitchens, 573 new bathrooms, rewiring in 625 homes, and 341 new central heating systems, as well as new electrical heating in 208 homes.

Other work carried out includes the installation of new windows, doors, insulation and roofing. Greenfields took over Braintree Council’s housing stock in 2007 and plans to spend £98million across the Braintree district on home upgrades by 2012.

The housing association is bringing its housing stock up to its own standard, which is above that of the Government’s Decent Homes standard.
