CHANGING rooms at a sports centre have been reopened after legionella bacteria was discovered in a water tank.

One of the changing rooms at Manningtree Sports Centre was closed last month after low levels of the bacteria were found during routine checks.

Tendring Council, which jointly runs the facility with Manningtree High School, carried out checks on all its facilities across the district.

As a precaution the council closed the changing rooms and carried out work to make sure the hot and cold water systems were clear of the bug. An alternative set of changing rooms remained open throughout.

Stephen Mayzes, Tendring councillor responsible for leisure, said: “The council has a duty of care to customers and staff and decided to go further than was required under the guidelines because of our responsibility to protect the public’s health.

“All the work has now been carried out, the centre has been given the all-clear and I am pleased to say the changing rooms have reopened.”
