Regarding the letter from Jenny Hughes on resurfacing work on roads in Wivenhoe (Gazette, Wednesday).
She rightly says the much-needed work on the Vine Farm estate was long overdue.
But what she fails to understand is that highways is a county function, not a borough one. As residents will know I have kept them updated about this issue and many people were pleasantly surprised to hear the work was being done at long last.
While I have had many calls, e-mails and verbal comments thanking me for my part in the delivery of this work, I also would point out many politicians of all political persuasions have raised this issue with me over the years.
The roads have now been done because they reached the top of the list of those in the worst condition in Colchester.
However, many residents have also played their part by contacting me over the years to make sure Vine Farm estate should not be forgotten.
A quick check to Essex County Council will reveal that it was, ultimately, my lobbying as Wivenhoe’s county councillor that achieved the much-needed resurfacing work. Many Wivenhoe residents have informed me it was my conscientious attitude to “on the ground” issues like this that assured my re-election to Essex County Council in June.
