MORE than 1,000 revellers from across the region descended on Mersea Island at the weekend to enjoy sunshine and fun and games afloat at the annual regatta.
The day included some serious sailing competitions, a variety of rowing races – many of them in a less serious vein – an outboard motor balloon contest, swimming competitions, and the ever-popular greasy pole event.
Scores of competitors tried their best to make their way along the pole, rigged over the side of a boat, to grab the flag, but all failed until Richard Webb, owner of the barge, Melissa, finally did it. Saturday evening saw further entertainment, including a spectacular firework display.
Ron Green, one of the organisers, said the event cost about £25,000 a year to stage, much of which was recouped through donations.
He said: “This year went very well. The weather was kind to us.
“The sailing got off to a slow start, because there was no wind, but when it did pick up,) they had a good sail.”
