A TEENAGER who scarred another young woman’s face with a wineglass in a row over a drink has been given a suspended sentence.

Emily Banks, of Old Ferry Road, Wivenhoe, left her victim physically and mentally scarred, Norwich Crown Court heard.

The 19-year-old had admitted unlawful wounding at an earlier hearing and yesterday returned to court to be given a 26-weeks young offenders’ institution sentence, suspended for 12 months. She was also ordered to do 150 hours of unpaid work and pay her victim £500 compensation.

The court heard Banks approached victim Elizabeth Lynley in Mojo’s nightclub, in Norwich, on April 3 and accused her of taking her glass of wine.

Ian Brighouse, prosecuting, said Miss Lynley, 22, was at the club with her sister, celebrating a birthday.

He added: “The sisters left their wineglasses on their table and when Miss Lynley returned, her glass had gone.

“She approached Banks and told her she thought she had her glass. She grabbed a glass and went back to her table and Banks followed her, came towards her and was about the throw the wine over her. Miss Lynley felt glass in her face.”

Mr Brighouse said it broke on impact, leaving Miss Lynley with a visible scar on her face and limited feeling where she was cut.

In a statement to the court, Miss Lynley said she had lost her self-esteem because of the injury and no longer liked going out.

Banks’s lawyer, Matthew Brooks, said: “She is deeply remorseful for what happened.

“She only meant to throw the glass of wine over her.”
