CRIME has fallen in Colchester town centre.

Figures for the past month show recorded crime in almost every category was down.

The only exception was common assaults committed by women, of which 15 were reported over the past four weeks, compared to six the previous month. The number of reports of assaults causing actual bodily harm was down from 30 to 17, grievous bodily harm from four to a single complaint and public order offences from six to five.

Insp Paul Butcher, of Colchester police’s town team, said: “I am not sure why common assaults by females are up. It is something we are looking at closely.

“Overall, everything is looking pretty good, though.”

He said previous concerns about a rise in crime on Tuesday nights had subsided, as that night had been quieter in August.
